Prep For Hair System Application with These Essentials

As you get ready for your next hairpiece application appointment, gather your supplies! You’ll need a few crucial products to ensure the best results possible. Once your client has arrived, you can start the process of prepping their scalp for the hairpiece application.

Add these must-have hair system prep products to your collection:

Adhesive Remover for Hair Systems

To start, you might need a few different types of adhesive remover for hair systems on hand. This is so you can remove their existing hairpiece if they’re wearing one when they come in for a reapplication (it’s always a good idea to recommend they have two hair systems, so one is ready to go when they arrive!). Having several products ready to go, such as our Sunshine Tape Oil Solvent, Citr-O-Sol, or Citrus Cleaner, is ideal. It’s better to be totally prepared for any situation than not!

 How to Use

  1. Spray the adhesive remover around the edges of the hairpiece and let it sit.
  2. Give it enough time to soak in and neutralize the hair tape or liquid adhesive.
  3. After the edges of the toupee loosen, apply more remover until you can lift the entire hairpiece off the client’s scalp.
  4. Ensure you do this gently to avoid damaging the toupee or tugging on the client’s natural hair.

Alcohol Solvent

Once you’ve removed the hairpiece, follow up with an alcohol solvent to get rid of any leftover residue, dirt, and oil on the scalp. This alcohol solvent is versatile in that it can help you prep, clean, and remove adhesives from your client’s scalp and hair system. If using it as a remover, keep in mind it’s slightly slower in breaking down the adhesives versus an oil-based remover. But the flip side is there will be less oily residue to clean up!

How to Use

  1. Apply the alcohol solution on the scalp to let it dissolve any leftover adhesive residue.
  2. Use a microfiber cloth to gently wipe the scalp clean of any dirt, oil, or glue.
  3. Repeat these steps as necessary.

Hairpiece Shampoo and Conditioner

Now it's time to wash your client's hair and scalp to rinse out all leftover remover solvents and adhesive residue. Use a hairpiece shampoo and conditioner that’s safe for hair systems and gentle on the scalp. You can also wash the hairpiece before application if needed.

How to Use

  1. Use warm water to carefully rinse the client’s scalp and natural hair.
  2. Then apply the shampoo, paying extra attention to the area where the hairpiece is worn.
  3. Rinse the hair and then apply conditioner to detangle, nourish, and add shine to the natural hair and hairpiece.
  4. Allow that to sit for a few minutes, then rinse.

Skin Prep Spray

Once you’ve washed the client’s hair and scalp and they’re fully dry, you’re ready for the last (but certainly not least!) prep step. Use a skin prep spray to create a protective, waterproof barrier to help prevent irritation from tapes and liquid adhesives. This invisible layer of protection is a game-changer in getting the best results for hairpiece applications.

How to Use

  1. Ensure the scalp is completely dry before applying the skin prep spray.
  2. Spritz an even coating over the entire area where you’ll be applying the hairpiece.
  3. Allow the solution to dry for at least 30 seconds before you apply any adhesive.
