If you work with hair systems, you’ve likely heard the question, “Are toupees itchy?” from your clients who are new to hairpieces. It’s a valid question! However, the thought that all toupees are itchy is 100% not true. A toupee sitting on your scalp for days to weeks at a time might get itchy for various reasons. So, the official answer is, if your toupee is itchy, something is wrong (and we’ll help you figure out how to fix it!).

The truth is, no one wants to deal with an itchy scalp. When and if it does happen, the good news is that there are ways to treat and prevent the itchiness for future wears. Is your client dealing with an itchy scalp when wearing their toupee hairpiece? Let’s take a look at a few different reasons why this happens, then go over ways to fix it so it doesn’t become a regular issue. Now, let’s get to the root of the problem!

Are Toupees Itchy? Why This Might Be an Issue

When your client comes to you about their itchy toupee hairpiece, there are a few different reasons why this might be happening. To start, it’s important to ask questions that uncover more about the client’s skin type, lifestyle, and hair system. This way, you can pinpoint exactly what might be causing this itchy situation.

Here are the most common reasons why a hair system will feel itchy:

Lack of Proper Hairpiece Maintenance

First, find out if your client is keeping up with the proper maintenance of their hairpiece. They should be washing and conditioning their hair system two to three times per week. This will help to remove any product buildup, dirt, and oil that can cause itchiness. Ensure they’re using hair care products that are specially formulated to be gentle on toupees.

Dandruff (Or Other Skin Conditions)

Any pre-existing skin conditions on the client’s scalp can cause itchiness whether they’re wearing a toupee or not. This is why issues such as dandruff or other scalp issues should be treated before a hair system application. Whether that’s using a dandruff shampoo or medicated ointment on the scalp, ensure this has been addressed before wearing a toupee hairpiece. Otherwise, itchiness is inevitable due to the skin condition underneath the hair system.

Low-Quality Hair System

Another common reason why hairpieces might be extra itchy is when a client is using a low-quality hair system. Certain chemicals and materials used in synthetic hair or hair system bases that aren’t the best quality may cause irritation (leading to an itchy toupee!). Make sure your client understands this when shopping for the right hair system for their price range.

Allergic Reaction to Hairpiece Base or Products

If your client is experiencing itchiness, figuring out if they’re allergic to either the toupee hairpiece base or any products could solve the issue. Depending on the material of the hair system base, whether that’s lace, polyurethane, or monofilament, ensure they aren’t allergic to the one they choose. Always perform a skin patch test before using any hair system glue or tape to determine if any allergic reactions occur.

Reaction to Excessive Heat and Sweat

We all know how hot it can get outside, especially during the summer! If your client lives in a generally hot or humid climate, this can cause the toupee to feel hot and sweaty. The combination of sweat and oil buildup can cause an itchy scalp and hairpiece. Using a skin prep spray to create a waterproof protective layer on the scalp before application can make all the difference here.

The Toupee Wasn’t Applied Properly

When the hairpiece is applied too tight or loose, there will be an uncomfortable and sometimes itchy result. Ensure the hair system is applied correctly to avoid any friction or sliding on the scalp. Taking the toupee off for a day or two to let the scalp breathe in between applications is also beneficial.

If your client is wondering, “How long does a toupee last after application?” Depending on the glue used and their lifestyle, they’ll need to have it removed and reapplied about every two to four weeks. With high-quality hair systems, they can usually reuse the toupee for six to ten months and sometimes up to a year.
